About

Welcome from the
Head of College & CEO

Welcome to The Women’s College within The University of Queensland, where we provide more than just a place to stay for young women embarking on their tertiary studies in Brisbane. As the Head of College & CEO, I am honoured to lead a dedicated team that focuses on creating a vibrant and supportive living and learning community.

At Women’s College, we prioritise not only your academic journey but also your personal and professional growth. Our commitment encompasses mentoring, career guidance, and holistic support for your wellbeing. We believe in fostering an environment where women support women, celebrating the rich diversity and unique qualities of the 300 residents and non-resident associates who call the College ‘home.’

Our approach centres on equity, empowering students to embrace a multitude of opportunities for personal growth. The College is more than just a residence. It is a place where lasting connections, friendships, and networks are formed, creating memories that will accompany you throughout your lifetime.

As you transition from school to university and into your chosen career, you will benefit from the unwavering encouragement and inspiration provided by our dedicated staff, fellow Woozas, alumnae, and an impressive network of accomplished women. The Women’s College experience goes beyond academics – it is an opportunity to become part of a community that propels you towards success.

For over 110 years, we have been dedicated to fostering future leaders. Today, our Student Leadership Team exemplifies inclusivity, equity, encouragement, and support, ensuring that no Wooza is left behind. They balance cherished College traditions with modern living, creating a dynamic community that embraces student interests and pursuits.

I invite you to explore our Prospectus and Wooza – a mini-magazine designed for future residents – and watch a conversation with two of our Residents to see how Women’s College has changed their lives while studying at University.

The Women’s College is not just a residence. It is a community. I am privileged to support our young women on their journey through university studies and the transition to adulthood.

Welcome to a special community where your journey is our priority.

College Profile

The Women’s College was established in 1914 and has enjoyed a rich history as part of the University of Queensland. The Women’s College was first situated at Kangaroo Point, moving to the current site at St Lucia in 1958.

College Motto

Capimus ut dividamus – “We take that we may share”

Women’s Mascots

Women’s first mascot, a little stone fawn known as “Eeyore”, was hand carved during the early 1940s by noted Australian sculptor Leonard Shillam. It was originally installed in Women’s garden at Kangaroo Point. After the College moved to St Lucia, Eeyore continued to live in the College gardens, despite living in constant threat of abduction from rival Colleges. After years of being defended and rescued, Eeyore is now  securely home within the Maureen Aitken Garden.

The current College mascot is a doll called Mary Wooza. The origin of this doll is shrouded in mystery. When Mary Wooza makes appearances at sporting matches and other College events, she is heavily guarded and all Woozas keep a close eye on her safety.

Life at College

At Women’s, you’ll quickly discover that College life is central to your university experience. Much more than a place to sleep, Women’s will be your social base and a place to call home. While you’ll have your own room, the communal areas are where you’ll develop lasting friendships.

Whether studying side-by-side for exams or enjoying some down time in the lounge, Women’s residents (or ‘Woozas’ as you affectionately become) are united by a desire to learn what the world has to offer them and what they have to offer the world. A nurturing and supportive environment is created by the Head of College and her team. The Deputy Head of College provides pastoral care support to all students, while a Senior Resident and Resident Assistants, themselves senior women, live alongside residents, offering friendship and guidance.

Academic support is available through the academic tutorial program and our superb facilities ensure you have access to everything you need to succeed in your studies. You’ll also be encouraged to pursue your interests outside of study. Social functions are organised throughout the year and the cultural program, including drama, choir, and debating, offers something for all tastes. Women’s also enjoys a strong sporting tradition with 17 sports on offer through the Intercollege Council Competition.

Women’s provides an intimate environment dedicated to personal and intellectual discovery among like-minded women. Life at Women’s is truly an exceptional experience.
