About the 2026 lecture
In Critical Minerals, Critical Decisions: Leading Through the Next Resources Era, 2026 Alumna of the Year Kristie Young (1992 – 1994) will draw on her leadership experience in the global mining and resources sector to explore the opportunities and challenges shaping the industry's future.
From lithium and rare earths to the technologies that power our everyday lives, critical minerals are shaping the future of the global economy. In this Helen McBride Annual Lecture, Kristie will share her perspective on the evolving role of mining in a rapidly changing world, and the leadership required to navigate it. Blending industry insight with personal experience, she challenges the next generation to think boldly about their role in shaping industries, communities, and the future.
About the the guest lecturer
During her time at UQ, Kristie Young was Treasurer of the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) and Treasurer of the Mining and Metallurgy Association (MAMA). She began her career as a mining engineer after graduating from UQ with a Bachelor Engineering (Mining) Hons (1995). During the mid ‘90s, Kristie worked in both underground and open-cut mining operations before her career moved to include roles in Executive Search (resources), lecturing at Curtin University in mine finance and economics, and Business Development Director roles with professional services firms EY and PwC.
Today, Kristie is a professional Board Director serving as a Non-Executive Director with Brazilian Rare Earths Ltd (ASX:BRE), Livium Ltd (ASX:LIT), Corazon Mining Ltd (ASX:CZN), Tasmea Ltd (ASX:TEA) and MinEx CRC. She also sits on UQ’s EAIT Strategic Advisory Board.
Kristie is an active volunteer, mentor and advocate for industry, regularly giving of her time. She is a Graduate and Fellow of the AICD and a Fellow of the AusIMM. She was the recipient of the 2026 Alumna of the Year Award at The Women's College.
